Speech-Language Pathology

Children and adults can experience difficulties with speech and language. Speech deficits impact verbal communication. Problems with producing sounds, such as using one sound for another (“wun” for “run”) is an articulation disorder. Speech disorders can be related to voicing and fluency. Stuttering is a fluency disorder that effects the rhythm of speech. Language disorders can affect understanding (receptive language) and/or sharing thoughts and ideas (expressive language). Aphasia, typically caused by a stroke, is a language disorder that can effect communication. Dysphagia is the technical term for swallowing disorders. Coughing during or after eating or drinking, wet sounding voice, struggling to chew or swallow and recurrent pneumonia or chest congestion associated with eating are some of the signs of dysphagia. Adults with dysphagia may eat less, become dehydrated or get food or liquids in their lungs. Difficulty swallowing can be caused by a stroke, brain injury, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, or degenerative neurological disorders .
